How do Solar Watches Work?
What is a Solar Watch? Most wrist watches are powered by either a built-in replaceable battery or by a winding mechanism. A solar watch, however, is powered by a series of built-in solar cells, usually located above the watch’s face. The watch is still powered by electricity, however; the solar cells simply convert the solar energy into electricity. Excess electricity is stored in a battery. This way, the watch can keep ticking day-round, regardless of whether its owner is outside or not. What Are Solar Cells? Although there are many different types of solar cells, the most common type used in solar watches are photovoltaic cells, or PV cells. These are convenient for such a portable, small-scale type of solar power, as they convert solar energy directly into electricity. Hence the name photovoltaic: photo, meaning “light,” and voltaic, meaning “electricity.” What Are They Made Of? PV cells are most commonly made out of silicon, which acts as a semiconductor. Each solar panel cell has
