Social workers maintain their interests and stamina in a number of ways. For example: (1) updating their knowledge and skills through continuing professional training as a part-time or full-time student (2) job rotation or enlargement once in a few years; this will widen the social worker’s experience with a variety of case-types (3) enlist the help of a mentor for professional growth and development (4) informal support network amongst peers Social workers render support to each other. Many social service agencies have organised discussion groups, mentoring schemes amongst others to assist newer social workers. Even social workers who work in isolation in organisations that employ only one social worker can get access to such informal networks. SASW has implemented the Foundation Programme and the Mentoring Scheme for new social workers and the Buddies Scheme for final year social work students to make it easier for them to acquire the ropes of the profession.
