How do search engines and directory trees work?

Due to the immense amount of web sites on the Internet, Search Engines and Directories have been designed to help you find a specific web site or piece of information by typing in keywords. Most search engines require you to type in keywords. Once the keywords have been submitted, a “spider” or “crawler” is sent out to search for matching terms, usually found in the HTML HEAD of a document. If you are using a Directory to search, these sites have been supplied by people who have evaluated the sites and placed them into the Directory database. Search engines search electronically for words found within the HTML meta tags of a document.
