How do scientists gather information about the earths crust?
There are a few different methods that scientists use. – They do use drills and get rock cores examples to study. This gives them a crosssection of the rock layers. – Seismic waves: Scientists are able to measure these waves as they pass through the Earth. As the waves come to different materials, they becoming longer, shorter, faster, or slower. Geologists study these changes in the waves, and are able to figure out about the crust. – Some scientists study energy released by earthquakes and other sources (like nuclear explosions). This energy travels through Earth as sound waves. By recording these sound waves at places distant from the earthquake, scientists are able to image the interior of Earth. – Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers – like a time-lapse camera giving scientists a detailed playback of how the crust shakes, shifts, and bulges when plates rupture and lava surges. http://nasadaacs.
