How do radio waves gain and loose energy?
Radio waves recieve their energy from a transmitter that emits the waves at a given amount of power stated in watts. As waves travel through the air/atmosphere they meet with resistance and start to dissipate. Radio waves do lose some energy when the are reflected back from objects (special coatings have even been developed that absorb the energy from radar transmitters, this is part of stealth technology) even so, normally the amount of radio signal loss is not much. This is the principle used in radar detection when the reflected signal is recieved and displayed on a radar screen. If the radio energy is in microwave radar form the signal will go to 2.5 times the distance of the effectiveness of the radar. If a radar can detect something 100 miles away that is the effective range, but that radar signal will travel another 150 miles further, meaning that if you listen for the signal of that radar you will know that it is looking around before the radar operator knows you are there!
