It starts at home. If kids are exposed to their parents/carers reading and reading to them and writing then they will realise it is a fun and normal thing to do. I read to my daughter from day one and she saw me reading and using the internet. Now she’s six with a fluency level of reading of an 8 year old and has to go to another class to get her reading books. Show them the love of letters by pointing them out everywhere you go. She now enjoys watching Barbie karaoke videos on you tube and singing along – she loves that she can read the words. Speaking, again begins at home and depends on the mother tongue. If the mother tongue is English then obviously it’s easier at school but just talking out loud and not using baby-ish language, talking to the child as if they are an adult but not swearing is ideal.
