How do problems relating to the thyroid gland effect humans?
Thyroid gland produces two hormones: triiodothyronine and thyroxine. Both of these help control your body’s metabolism and for normal development of the brain, especially during the first 3 years of life. An infant whose thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone may, in severe cases, become mentally retarded. Older children also need thyroid hormones to grow and develop normally. To determine the cause of any defects in thyroid gland, Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) levels are measured which can help determine whether problem is due to a damaged thyroid gland or some other cause (such as a problem with the pituitary gland or the hypothalamus). It’s always better to keep the TSH levels under check to prevent any condition.
