Never been in prison but in the early 50s I spent many months in an RAF convalescent centre near plymouth For relaxation we often had coach trips around dartmoor On the moor we often saw convicts pulling carts of stones , breaking them up & building walls On one occasion there was a prison breakout &the moor was swarming with warders ,Police & surprisingly the army Apparantly Princetown gaol was a “Hard labour” prison but they were not all like that
