The Eye of the Storm Getting sent to the principal’s office is an unpleasant experience for most kids. They have to sit on that chair while fellow students on more reputable business form a “gaper’s block” looking at them. Finally, they are ushered into “The Presence” and held to account. Their first lesson in real-world authority is, hopefully, a positive if not “transformative” experience and it is only one duty in the day that requires considerable skill. The principal and her staff end up with the most serious emergencies concerning the physical plant or weather as well. Disciplinarian and emergency manager are just two of the “hats” worn by the people who serve as principals. Those who serve without assistants as the sole administrator are especially challenged to be there when a calm head and resourceful leadership are demanded. Kids Should Come First One of the principal’s primary jobs is to make sure every child gets the best education possible. The problem is that every child’
