I feel bad for giving you the answer for your report, but as an American citizen, you need to know and understand how presidential elections work, so here goes. First there is the selection process, where each party nominates a single candidate to endorse for the position of president. Each party and each state does this slightly differently, but it is typically through primary elections and caucuses on different dates depending on the state and the party. In the primary elections people vote for which candidate they think is best from each party, although typically you may only vote for one candidate total, not one from each party. In some states you must register your political affiliation and may only vote in that primary. Then, after all of the states have voted there is a convention held by the party where they officially announce which candidate they have selected to run for president and they start campaigning for the general election, which is held in November.
