How do physiatrists diagnose?
Physiatrists use many different tools to diagnose a patients condition, but the most important ones are listening to a patient describe their problem and performing a physical exam. When needed, physiatrists utilize conventional radiological tools such as x-ray, CT scan and MRI. They also may perform diagnostic nerve study tests called EMG/ Nerve conductions which can help to localize nerve damage.
Physiatrists diagnostic tools are the same as those used by other physicians, with the addition of special techniques in electrodiagnostic medicine like electromyography (EMG), nerve conduction studies, and somatosensory evoked potentials. These techniques help the physiatrist to diagnose conditions that cause pain, weakness and numbness.
