How Do Photographic Images Move from Scientific Documents to Work of Arts?
Paul Crompton, University Hospital of Wales Almost from its inception photography was adopted as an objective, documentary tool for recording medical conditions and cataloging them for teaching and research. As the 20th century moved into its second decade photography was also establishing itself as an art form, particularly in the United States, as the country strived to establish its own cultural identity. Drawing on the work of cultural theorists John Berger and Roland Barthes this presentation will explore the language of photography, how images are read within a cultural context and where the crossover between scientific textbook and gallery wall might occur. .
