How do photographers use math?

In many cases photographers don’t  actually need do the math (although they might), they just have to know the concepts. Take the inverse square law, for example. The intensity of radiation decreases proportionally to the  square of the distance from the source. What?! But here’s what it means-if you had your light 4 feet away from your subject and you moved it to 8 feet away the subject would only get 1/4 the amount of light. 4X4=16, 8X8=64. 16 divided by 64 equals 1/4. That also explains why your the flash on your point and shoot will light up a person standing 10 feet away but not 100 feet away- do the math!
