How do people make career decisions?
Many individuals unwisely choose a college major and a career solely on peer pressure, parental influence, advice from others, stars-in-the-sky fantasies, or only for the financial gain they think a certain career can bring. Some just take the path of least resistance drifting into the first job or easiest major that comes long. Of course, you should have dreams; you should hear what your friends have to say and you should definitely consider input from your parents. BUT using only that kind of information can lead you down a career path for which you are ill-suited and in which you may be terribly unhappy. Many working adults would choose a different career if they could or if they had it to do over. Unfortunately there are a number of graduating seniors in college asking, Why did I ever choose this major? A more studied and scientific approach to choosing a major would more likely produce a better decision. Also see Q20.
