It can be produced from various chemical reactions and it can also be produced from special molecular membranes which will separate the various molecules in air. Since molecules are of different sizes, a special membrane can be produced which will separate the oxygen molecules from other molecules which make up air. Certain chemical reactions will produce small amounts of oxygen but to produce the large amounts needed for medical and diving use, the membranes are frequently used. They can be very expensive and not the sort of thing that most shops can afford. Many shops will purchase pure oxygen in large cylinders from industrial producers and then mix the oxygen to make some of the special breathing gases that divers use.
