They WERE decent back in the day, but then (as alluded from the previous answer) they figured out that they could make decent money by having someone drive up the bids. Last year, I went to one locally, and I watched one particular person talking with the auctioneer beforehand. During the auction, he naturally kept driving the bids up (way up past what most thought the values were). As people were catching on that this gentleman was an insider, they stopped bidding past their threshholds. So, at the end, the auctioneer ended up with quite a few cars that were unsold (technically, as folks stopped bidding and the “insider” started winning all the bids). It was kinda funny to watch the whole sham backfire…
