How do people demand protection money?
The criminal/ gangster sees a bar or club and offers them protection services for a sum of money per week or per month. If the manager declines, the criminals politely leave and the establishment promptly and mysteriously suffers some misfortune, but not bad enough to put it out of business. The same criminals go back some time later and politely offer their services again, but at an inflated price from the first time. If the manager declines again, the cycle is repeated time and again until the manager either goes out of business, sells up or starts to pay. If the manager accepts the services but does not pay up, things will invariably get nasty. It should be noted that most, but not all of the ‘victims’ of protection rackets are involved in some form of crime themselves, necessitating the need for protection, as they cannot easily go to the cops.
