How do people catch shigellosis?
The bacteria passes from one infected person to the next. It’s in the stool of infected people while they’re sick and for a week or two afterward. Most shigella infections result from poor hygiene and contact with someone who’s infected. But shigella infections may come from eating food contaminated by someone who’s infected and handles it. Vegetables can also become contaminated if they’re harvested from a field with sewage in it. How can shigellosis be treated? Shigellosis can usually be treated with antibiotics. Unfortunately, some shigella bacteria have become resistant to antibiotics and using antibiotics to treat shigellosis can actually make the germs more resistant in the future.
