How do people attain salvation or eternal happiness?
In Buddhism, eternal happiness is the state of Nirvana. The way to Nirvana is the Middle Path which avoids the two extremes of self-mortification that weakens the intellect and self-indulgence that hinders moral progress. This Middle Path consists of the Noble Eightfold Path of right understanding, right thoughts, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration. The first two are classified as Wisdom, the second three as Morality, and the last three as Concentration. The development of Morality, Concentration, and finally Wisdom are the three stages on the path that leads to Nirvana.
