HOW THEY FIND MATES Breeding and Reproduction Penguin Breeding: The breeding season in penguins corresponds to the time when food is at peak availability, which occurs during late spring. The general rule is that the length of the breeding season is opposite to latitude, with higher latitudes having a shorter breeding season that lower latitudes. For breeding to be successful, a penguin must secure a nest site as well as locate and court potential mates. Nesting Site: Males arrive at the breeding grounds a few days before the females to secure a nest site and build a nest. In the Humboldt, Magellanic, and Little penguin species the nest is a cave or burrow, while other sub-Antarctic species build their nests from grasses and vegetation.
