How do patients who do not receive blood transfusion respond in surgery and post-surgery?
Patients who refuse blood transfusions consistently fair better than those who do not. Fewer complications occur during surgery. Patients recover faster and spend less time in the hospital. They return to their normal lives more quickly. They go back to work faster. They have significantly fewer post operative infections and complications. They leave the hospital knowing they have no chance of contracting over ten known viruses, the worst of which is HIV/AIDS. ‘Women [who receive blood transfusion with heart surgery] were also more likely to be infected, have breathing problems, spend more time in intensive care and die in the hospital.’ Nicholas Bakalar in The New York Times – Based on a Study by The Journal of Women’s Health link ’Bloodless surgery carries less risk of infection and … as well as less postoperative recovery time.’ link ‘Patients receive no foreign blood, reducing the risk of complications and a long hospital stay.’ link ’Recent studies also reveal faster recovery time
