How do patents affect prices and access to medicines in developing countries?
Prices are determined by a variety of factors, including manufacturing costs, mark-ups by wholesalers and retailers, tariffs and value-added taxes, and the competitive market environment. In some cases, prices also reflect direct government intervention in the market. Pharmaceutical prices generally are not much different because of patent protection.
