Either is acceptable. In an outpatient or physician office setting, a PA or an NP can bill “incident to” a physician’s services (under the physician’s UPIN number.) Alternatively, in either inpatient or outpatient/physician office settings, they may bill under their own billing numbers (at a reduced rate). However, provider rules vary and, at present, most commercial payors do not pay for services other than those rendered “incident to”.
