How Do On-Site Construction Project Managers Do It?
Journal of Management in Engineering (04/08) Laufer, Alexander; Shapira, Aviad; Telem, Dory The construction environment is highly dynamic, and project managers must balance complexity and uncertainty with deadlines. This study sought to gauge how successful project managers spend their time on-site, focusing on communications. The study found that project managers were strongly inclined to verbal communications of information, spending nearly 80 percent of their activities and time on the function. Meetings accounted for 60 percent of activities; 80 percent of meetings were unplanned. Informal interaction with nor more than two individuals was the preferred mode of communications. The results of the study could be used by future project managers, educators teaching those prospects, and others working in similar dynamic work environments.
