How do on demand tankless water heating systems work?
Unlike a regular hot water storage tank that heats water and keeps it hot in a storage tank, a tankless water heater only heats water when it’s needed. A cold water pipe runs into a small wall mounted unit (about the size of a medicine cabinet) and feeds into a thin pipe that loops around inside the unit. When you turn on a tap, the pressure of the water passing through the unit turns on a series of heaters or burners to warm the water before it passes out of the unit into the hot water pipe running to the tap. Since the unit only works when you want it (on demand) there is no excess energy consumed to heat water and keep it warm in a storage tank.
