How do oceans form?
Next, due to plate movements, Pangaea splitted in Laurasia and Gondwanaland and splitted up further into the current seven continents in Earth we have now. The splitting of Pangaea resulted in the formation of the five oceans that we have currently, separated by the seven continents on Earth. The oceans contained saltwater, which most probably originated when volcanic activity during the cooling of Earth discharged active elements and compounds that dissolved into water, forming salt and acids.
