How do molds grow?
Molds multiply by producing microscopic spores. Many spores are so small they easily float through the air and can be carried for great distances by even the gentlest breezes. When a spore lands on something moist or damp, the spore can germinate to grow into a new mold. Besides moisture, molds need oxygen and nutrients, or food, to grow, but almost any organic substance can serve as food for molds. Most buildings are full of organic materials that mold can use as food, including paper, cloth, wood, plant material, and even soil. Return to the list of FAQ.
