A libertarian would feel that affirmative action is unjust because it is putting a restriction on the free market. If a white man is better than a black man at a given job, but the black man is given the job anyway, affirmative action has not only hurt the better skilled white man, but also the company that couldn’t hire him because of affirmative action. The company not only loses the better employee, but worse. The company loses the better employee, possibly to a competitor. It has essentially put a kink in the free market. Conservatives would say that hiring the lesser of two employees is bad for business and thus bad for the economy. A social democrat would say that it is the white man’s fault that the black man is still impoverished. Thus it is our responsibility to take the extra step to help him pull himself up through affirmative action. I feel it is unnecessary.
