How do LEAs report independent study (sometimes referred to as “home-schooling”) courses in CALPADS?
While we recognize that independent study courses are not usually put into a master schedule, it is necessary to capture student course enrollment information for the purposes of Highly Qualified Teacher reporting under NCLB. In addition, the course enrollment data reported in CALPADS will be used to determine whether or not a teacher is appropriately assigned once the California Longitudinal Teacher Integrated Data Education System (CALTIDES) becomes operational in 2012. Reporting Elementary-level Independent Study Courses Independent study courses for elementary grades (this can include middle grades, depending on standards level of content) should be reported to CALPADS as course sections in the Course Section File. For each course section: • Use the “Self-contained” (code 1000) in CRS-State Course Code (Field 9.07). • The Independent Study Indicator (Field 9.23) should be set to “Y.” Reporting Secondary-level Independent Study Courses Independent study courses for secondary grades
