How Do Impact Wrenches Work?
Power An impact wrench, or air wrench, works by air power, which is supplied by a compressed air tank. Air under pressure in the tank is fed through a hose, which is connected to a nozzle on the end of the impact wrench. The nozzle has a valve that remains closed while the air pressure is hooked up to the gun. When the valve is opened, the air pressure is allowed to flow into the gun, supplying drive to the mechanism. Some air wrenches have the valve inside the gun, in others it is around the connection area. Motor An impact wrench has a turbine-style motor drive system. This is a series of turbine blades, mounted on a crank shaft. When the air valve is opened (by pressing the impact wrench trigger), air is sent into the gun. It passes over the turbines at a high pressure which causes them to spin very fast. The turbines will turn the crank shaft which is connected to the wrench clutch and gear system. This system turns the wrench chock and bit. Transmission An impact wrench has a simp
