How do I work out if its cheaper to boil a kettle using gas or electricity?
That’s a tricky question to answer with just kettle either on Gas or Electric! If you are heating both from a hob (rather than an electric kettle) and that everything else is even then I would say Gas is cheaper and quicker. If however you mean an electric kettle that you plug in and a kettle to put on a gas stove then you are comparing 2 different things and there are a lot of other things to consider. For example, the electric kettle element is inside the water and the kettle is insulated – where the gas is outside the gas kettle and the metal isn’t insulated. This means that you have to consider things like heat loss from the kettles to work out the energy you have to put in and then things get complicated!! However, with the electric kettles insulation I would say (without doing complicated sums) that the electric kettle is cheaper How do you work it out? Well the easy way would be to turn off all the gas in the house, put 1 litre of water ina pan. Take a reading of your gas meter
