The Wieliczka Salt Mine, outside of Krakow, Poland, is no mere mine. This one, in particular, is one of UNESCO`s World Heritage Sites. It isn`t hard to see why: inside this mine winds three hundred kilometers of art, carvings and even chapels carved out of its very walls. It has been open so long that even the Polish astronomer, Nicolaus Copernicus, was a tourist here, wandering past the same mammoth mining equipment, and underground lakes of brine. Take a train or bus from Krakow`s main train station, Krakow Glowny, to Wieliczka. This should take about 15-25 minutes, and you can follow signs directing you to the salt mine from there.
