How do I use a PortBot to let me know when I have new mail?
This is by far the most-asked question. Unfortunately, the answer is that you probably can’t very easily. On some UNIX hosts, PortBots can be used to alert you of new mail, but an increasingly large number of operating systems aren’t displaying this information any more (for example, System V-based OS’s don’t seem to do this). I know that some versions of SunOS do it and so do some other flavors of UNIX. Also, it may be possible to check for new mail if your mail is on a POP server.
