How do I use a plumbing snake on a toilet?
Insert the cable end of the plumbing snake, or auger, into the toilet bowl drain. Make sure you wear rubber gloves. Place the auger’s curved section, which is covered by rubber or plastic, firmly in the drain and facing whichever way the drain faces, either to the front or the back.Turn the auger’s handle while pushing down. Once you feel the cable reach the clog, keep turning the handle to break through the clog. Pull on the handle while continuing to turn the handle clockwise. The goal is to pull the blockage back out through the pipe and bowl drain.Pull the auger gently from the bowl. Don’t damage the bowl. Have a bowl and newspaper ready to dispose of whatever blockage has been removed. Once you have unclogged the toilet with the auger, use a plunger on the toilet drain to loosen any remaining clog. Flush the toilet.
