How do I use a geiger counter to measure radiation in granite countertops?
A- Our detectors are able to detect gamma radiation emitting from a granite counter top, however, it is not advisable to use them for radon detection. A very small percentage of granite counter tops may contain amounts of gamma radiation or radon emissions. For information about using our instruments to conduct a survey of your granite countertops to determine if there is gamma radiation present, see the Taking Measurements portion of our FAQs. Gamma radiation is measured in R/hr (rate) and pCi (activity). Instruments, such as the Inspector and the Abacus, are ideal for this type of survey. It is not recommended to use our instruments for detecting Radon emissions, however it can be done using special methods. For more information, go to the radon detection page of our FAQs. Radon measurements are typically measured in pCi/L (volume). There are much more practical commercially available tests for detecting radon.
