Once you’ve decided to take the plunge and upgrade from Windows 2000 to Windows XP, plan to devote at least an afternoon to the process. Before beginning, be sure to back up important files–such as documents, music and pictures–to a CD or other medium, as glitches can happen and important data can be lost during the upgrade. Disconnect your computer from the Internet. While this step isn’t absolutely necessary, it will protect your computer from viruses during the upgrade while your antivirus program isn’t working. Place the Win XP Pro disk in the CD or DVD ROM drive. The setup program should automatically begin.
