The best suggested tactic for this is to get the Needle power and rapidly press the A button to spike him continuously. To unlock Metaknight in City Trial, break a cumulative total of 1000 boxes. Note that both of these characters can only be used in City Trial Free Run, and once their HP meters run out, they can only flounder helplessly on the ground until that game is ended.
