People from all over the world come to Japan to work every year. Many of them work for companies who employ them under “fixed,” or “limited-term” contracts. Under a limited-term contract you must work for a set amount of time–usually one year. Terminating these contracts is difficult, but not impossible. Your personal contract should lay out the procedures for quitting your job. If you encounter difficulty with your employer, and are unable to resolve it with the help of a labor official, consider consulting a lawyer. Consult your contract, and check the procedures for quitting. Follow them, if possible. Speak with your employer. Provide a valid reason for quitting, and inform him of your intended quitting date as far in advance as possible. It may be difficult for your employer to find a replacement on short notice.
