How do i tell if my car has antifreeze in the cooling system?
If the coolant in your vehicle is brownish then I think you are well overdue a change of coolant. Your handbook should tell you of the ratio which to mix it with water and what antifreeze to use – some blocks and coolant systems dont like certain antifreeze additives and may react adversley. Drain your system, there is usually some means of draining it at the base of your radiator, remove the cap from the expansion tank or radiator and drain the waste coolant into a suitable container – don’t chuck it down the drain dispose of it at your local refuse centre; they usually have a big container for waste liquids. Refit your bung and having premixed your coolant in a bucket, to the correct ratio, poor it in your system via a filler plug on the radiator. It will be difficult to get the capacity stated in your handbook into the system initially.
