Pour calcium-based hermit crab sand, children’s play sand or marine aquarium sand in the pet’s tank to maintain 3 to 5-inches of substrate at all times. Add enough sand so the crab can fully bury himself. The sand amount varies depending on the size of the crab.Moisten the sand with a spray bottle filled with dechlorinated water. Mist water over the sand until a hygrometer placed inside the habitat reaches 50 percent humidity or higher.Replace the sand if mold growth appears. Mold can causes illness in pet hermit crabs.
