How Do I Stop My Toddler Hitting People And Objects?
Most young children go through a hitting phase. It’s usually because they have a hard time verbally communicating. When you see your child hitting someone/something, go over to her, get down on her level, take her hands (not hard, just gently) and look into her eyes. Explain that we don’t hit. Ask her why she did it, and try to talk her through whatever is frustrating her. If she continues, make sure she’s getting a punishment (time-out usually is best.) When she gets through frustration without lashing out, praise her. Make sure she is being read to, to help expand her vocabulary and make communication easier, and make sure she has other outlets for her energy (arts and crafts, some kind of age-appropriate exercise.) Sleep can be a big factor, so make sure she’s at least resting during her nap time.
