This is a very common and natural problem. Your first answer was “Stop going near his food.” and that is the answer. Pack leaders do not mess with the other dogs after they have eaten. Yes, they eat first, but then they go lie down and relax. Food aggression isn’t really that big a deal. If it’s just you and your dog in the house, just leave him to eat in peace. If there are others- especially children in the house, feed the dog somewhere where nobody will approach the dog while he is eating like in his crate, outdoors, in the garage, in a bathroom… If this is your only problem, you are lucky!
