Surface PreparationClean the concrete surface of any dirt or grime. Use a hose fitted with a high pressure nozzle to wash down your patio or use a pressure washer. Then apply a concrete etching solution to the concrete. Muriatic acid is an effective etching solution; or there are organic salt-based etching solutions available. Etch the concrete until it has a surface similar to a piece of 120 grit sandpaper.
