Change 30% of the water immediately, then don’t feed your fish for 1 week. After this, only feed the fish 6 days of the week, leaving 1 day without food. Fish also feed on the algy in the tank and on their day without food they will eat that instead of regular food. Excess food rotts in the tank, giving off the nitrates. The part water change will dilute the nitrates in your tank and the rest will dissapear in the week you don’t feed them then all will be well. Also a part water change of 30% once a month should stop this problem re-occuring. Don’t forget to use tap safe water treatment after each water change.
