The spectroscopy set up refers to how the equipment is oriented with respect to each other. For absorption spectroscopy, the general set up is some variant on the theme: Emission source ==> Sample==> Detector Because you shine the source through the sample and see what was absorbed. The absorption spectrum is what the output of the detector looks like, and depending on the type of spectroscopy you’re doing that can vary quite a bit.
