How do I set up OS X on a new Western Digital internal 250 GB hard drive?

I installed a new WD 250 GB Hard drive on my 15″ G4 PowerBook but when I try to re-install the OS from the original grey disks that came with my computer, when I get to the “select destination” page I get a hard drive icon with a big red exclamation point and can’t go any further. The hard drive icon shows that there are 232GB free.
