How Do I set up my Yamaha AV Receiver?

“..have used the composite cables to connect from my dvd to receiver, then just the yellow composite to connect from the monitor out jack to the AV1 jack on the TV.” This is the worst way to hook this up. My advice is this: Run SVideo straight to the TV from the DVD player Run optical or coaxial digital to the DVD input on the Yamaha It makes no sense to run video through the receiver unless you have 2 or more systems and want to let the Yamaha control everything. Dont believe me? Do this: Buy an SVideo cable. Radio Shack or the AR Pro2 series are fine. Hook the SVideo up, fire up a DVD and pause the screen with lots of colors and sharp edges. Now – toggle the TV between the Composite feed you have now and the SVideo feed. The difference should be obvious. A component cable would be a bit better than SVideo – but a good HD rated component cable is about $60. A $20 SVideo cable is the better bang-for-the-buck.
