Modern side-by-side refrigerators have a frost-free freezer to control frost buildup in the freezer compartment and not limit the area for food storage. The evaporator fan operates to circulate the cold air throughout the freezer compartment when the condenser is on. When the timer enacts a defrost mode, both the evaporator fan and condenser cease to work while the defrost heater is warming and defrosting the evaporator coil. If an evaporator fan is defective and does not turn on, there will be uneven freezing in the appliance due to no air circulation. Unplug the refrigerator power cord from the electrical socket. If you are unable to reach the power cord, turn the circuit breaker to the appliance off. Open the freezer door. Remove all food items from the top shelf of the freezer in front of the evaporator fan and place them in an ice chest or on different shelves in the freezer.
