Fist check out if the dishwasher outlet tube(attached to the sink trap) is blocked. Sounds like there is water in the base of your D/washer which has activated the polystyrene float, which is a safety device that cuts off continuence of the water cycle. The tube itself would not be blocked but the pvc small nozzle (part of the sink trap) could need clearing out. When a dishwasher is installed, a small nipple attached to the sink trap has to be drilled through and the d/washer draintube attached thereto. Sometimes a plumber will just push a screwdriver through and leave it at that! This leaves sharp edges which catch small amounts of dishwasher debris eventually causing the small tube to block. The next procedure is to mop up the water lying in the bottom of your dishwasher to allow the polystyrene float to drop allowing the microswitch to operate(whatever you do, TURN the power OFF at the switch).
