How do I register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)?
The NMC regulates nurses and midwives in the UK. On 1 September 2005 the NMC introduced an entirely new system for the registration of nurses from outside the EEA. Applicants who apply to become registered nurses with the NMC must demonstrate competence in the English language by achieving a specific mark in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). From 1 February 2007 the NMC raised the minimum English language overall pass score from 6.5 to 7.0 for overseas-trained nurses and midwives coming to work in the UK. All applicants who apply for registration as a nurse and who meet the NMC minimum requirements will now be required to undertake all or part of the Overseas Nurses Programme (ONP).
